1419892016Who do I help?

I work with adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, and trauma. These individuals find that people can’t relate to them and often stop believing in themselves. Their life is not what they imagined, causing them to feel isolated and making them sometimes wonder if they are going crazy.

No, they are not going crazy. But they need someone who can listen and understand how to help them. I have made this my mission. I help my clients find the best version of themselves so they can live the best lives possible.

For over 20 years, I’ve helped adults resolve relationship issues and recover from anxiety, depression, and trauma. I also help adults with family members on the autism spectrum, as I have personal experience with these unique issues.

Visual participation is a must.

I use visual techniques in my therapy, so I primarily work over video sessions through online teletherapy. Many clients find this more effective and convenient than in-person therapy because they are more comfortable in their homes.

Some home-bound adults cannot access counseling services because they lack transportation or don’t have the needed technology. I provide in-home sessions for these adults who live in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

1912572628Therapy is work – but worth the effort.

Our 50-minute sessions start with me welcoming you to the session and asking how you are doing. I ask if you have anything that you would like to discuss specifically. If not, we review our plan and discuss how our previous plans went. We strengthen or learn new skills and techniques. I answer any questions, and we make a new plan before you go.

Therapy can feel strange at first. When people are not used to having someone listen, it can be overwhelming to be heard and seen. It takes courage and strength to talk about things that make you feel vulnerable. We take steps that are comfortable for you and go at your own pace. We pay attention to where you’re feeling emotion, stress, tension, and anxiety in your body and work with it.

Therapy can be emotionally and physically tiring. Therapy works best when you show kindness and compassion to yourself, but it still involves a lot of work. Sometimes therapy can become frustrating, and at other times, it is exciting. Overall, my clients look forward to trying some of the suggested techniques.

Our sessions are structured; sometimes, my clients are surprised to learn a new perspective. Many clients tell me, “I never thought of it like that.” They say they prefer me because I’m blunt but kind and will tell them the truth.

There are ebbs and flows, just like in the rest of life. Keep your sessions even when things are going well. Many people don’t get to celebrate these achievements outside of our sessions. We can celebrate your wins together.

The benefits outweigh the cost.

Of course, you can try this alone. I’ve tried that myself and learned to trust somebody and take that risk. Taking the chance to trust someone is scary, but I didn’t do it alone. You don’t, either.

My clients gain great relief and a breath of fresh air. They are no longer alone and learn to trust, listen, and validate themselves. These things don’t come naturally because my clients received no prior instruction on doing this for themselves.

I teach my clients to manage and process their emotions so they can think clearly and not lose their cool. They are more in control regardless of the situation, allowing them to regain their life and feel a renewed sense of purpose.

About Me

About DoreenMy perspective comes from life experience and training.

I’ve been where you are and lived through all the crap you are going through now. Those life experiences make me a better therapist because I can genuinely connect with my clients at a level that most therapists cannot. That makes me different, and that’s why I’m here. I want to help other people through the biggest challenges of their lives.

My professional training started with a Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling from Wayne State College and a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri – Columbia.

I helped clients in Missouri and Texas before becoming a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Minnesota and North Dakota, which required an additional 12 college credits of post-graduate work. I am also a Licensed Professional Counselor in South Carolina and Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington. I am certified to practice Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

In my time outside of therapy…

I love being outdoors, going for walks, camping, kayaking, roasting marshmallows, and sitting by the fire. Indoors, I like to read and do cross stitch.
